This topic describes how to troubleshoot exceptions that occur in the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) component of a Windows Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance.
Background information
Windows Remote Desktop Services depend on the RPC component of the Windows operating system. If an exception occurs in the RPC component, Remote Desktop Services cannot run as expected. As a result, you cannot connect to the Windows ECS instance by using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).
Problem description
If the RPC component runs as expected, the status of the RPC component in the Task Manager window of the Windows operating system is Running.
Solutions
Before you perform high-risk operations, such as modifying the configurations or data of an Alibaba Cloud instance, check the disaster recovery and fault tolerance capabilities of the instance to ensure data security. We recommend that you create snapshots in advance. For information about snapshots, see Overview.
If you granted specific users the permissions on sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords, or submitted sensitive information in the Alibaba Cloud Management Console, we recommend that you modify the sensitive information at the earliest opportunity.
Solution 1: Use a snapshot of the system disk to restore the RPC component
If you created a snapshot for the system disk when the RPC component of the Windows ECS instance ran as expected, you can use the snapshot to restore the RPC component. For more information, see Roll back a disk by using a snapshot.
Solution 2: Re-initialize the system disk to restore the RPC component
Re-initialize the system disk of the Windows ECS instance in the ECS console. After you re-initialize the system disk, the system disk is reverted to the state when it was created. The RPC component of the instance is restored. For more information, see Re-initialize a system disk (reset the operating system).
After you re-initialize the system disk of the Windows ECS instance, data stored on the system disk is lost. Before you re-initialize the system disk, create a snapshot for the system disk. After you re-initialize the system disk, create a disk from the snapshot and attach the disk to the Windows ECS instance. This way, you can restore the data stored on the system disk before the re-initialization.
